FPIES (Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome) Treatment

FPIES (Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome) is a delayed, non-IgE-mediated food allergy that typically causes vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy several hours after eating a trigger food. It can be difficult to diagnose because standard allergy tests do not detect it and its symptoms can resemble gastroenteritis or food poisoning. Most children have one trigger food and eventually outgrow the condition.

New Treatment Option for FPIES

Traditionally, treatment has involved avoiding the trigger food for several years. However, we are pleased to be able to offer patients at Allergy London a new form of treatment involving the carefully controlled, gradual reintroduction of trigger foods, starting with very small amounts and increasing them slowly over several months.

This approach was first developed by a dedicated allergy team at BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, which included Dr Vicky Le Blanc, Paediatric Allergist.

Their early experience has been encouraging, with children generally progressing towards eating the food freely within 9–12 months, and reactions during reintroduction typically being mild. The approach may also help avoid some of the nutritional, quality of life, and potential allergy-related consequences of prolonged food avoidance.

However, this remains an emerging approach rather than established standard care – hence the importance of shared discussion and individualised patient care.
