How to Appropriately Store Adrenaline Autoinjectors (AAIs) and EurNeffy (Neffy) Devices – Especially During Hot Weather
As the UK has been experiences unusually hot weather, it’s important to store Adrenaline Autoinjectors (AAIs) – including EpiPen and Jext, as well as EurNeffy, the needle-free nasal spray correctly to ensure they remain effective in an emergency.
Exposure to excessive heat can affect these medications, so taking extra care during hot temperatures is essential.
Tips to keep EpiPens, Jexts, as well as EURNeffy (Neffy) safe in the heat:
- Store adrenaline devices at room temperature: Keep AAI’s EpiPens and Jext between 15°C and 25°C, and Neffy between 20°C and 25°C.
- Use an insulated bag, especially in these warm conditions or when travelling; insulated bags (such as Frio) are ideal for maintaining a stable temperature without damaging the device.
- Avoid extreme temperatures: Do not refrigerate or expose them to direct sunlight.
- EurNeffy has been shown to remain effective even if it is exposed to high temperatures for a short time. In testing, it continued to work properly after being stored at 50°C (122°F) for up to 3 months. This can provide reassurance if your EURneffy is exposed to warmer environments or accidental exposure to extreme heat.
- Never leave them in a hot car, as high temperatures can degrade the adrenaline and render the device ineffective.
- If EurNeffy is accidentally frozen (below -15°C or 5°F) studies showed it is still effective after thawing. (Likely taking up to 20 minutes to thaw)- and while frozen EurNeffy will not deliver epinephrine.
- Check your EpiPens and Jext (AAI) devices: AAIs have a small window for checking the adrenaline liquid, if the liquid appears cloudy or discoloured, replace the AAI – the adrenaline should be clear and colourless without discoloration or visible particles.
Always carry your adrenaline with you, don’t leave them in a drawer or at home. Always keep them easily accessible and carry 2 devices at all times. Up to 1 in 5 people may require a second dose during a severe allergic reaction.
