Allergy London’s Paediatric Allergist, Professor Adam Fox, was pleased to address questions in the Daily Mail regarding the very high pollen levels that are currently being experienced this week. Often referred to as a “Pollen Bomb,” nearly all of the UK has been experiencing the exceptionally high levels of pollen, causing significant discomfort for hay fever sufferers.
Key things Professor Fox shared in the article on the topic of hay fever:
- Climate change appears to have a genuine impact, with all seasons now seeming to be bad, whereas previously – for example, earlier on in my career you would have a bad season and a not-so-bad season – now they all seem to be bad.
- Warm days with a slight breeze can exacerbate the symptoms experienced by sufferers
- Avoid going out early in the morning and late in the evening when pollen levels are highest, due to the low density of pollen grains.
- Regular hand washing, showering, and washing your hair when you come home can prevent the transfer of pollen to your pillow and nostrils, reducing congestion and improving sleep quality.
- Avoid Kenalog, a steroid injection with long-term safety concerns, especially bone thinning.
Professor Fox shared his expertise alongside other allergy specialists to help hay fever sufferers to be more aware and informed about some of the effective things they can do to minimise exposure to pollen and ease symptoms. Covered in this article was some of the things that are less helpful / should be avoided.
